Food Finds January 2005

On this page we will share interesting food finds we come across locally, nationally and internationally, whether it's a mouth-watering dish at a restaurant, a new ingredient, a chef to watch for, an exciting wine or handy new kitchen gadget. These items will change frequently so make sure to check in regularly. (Locations will be in Toronto unless otherwise indicated.)

  • Golden confectioner sugar at Noah's Natural Foods (several locations in downtown Toronto)
  • Osgoode Hall Cafeteria with Chef Yassar Qahwish (Queen St. West at University Ave)
  • Hot chocolate, (yes, another one, it's a long winter) at Ed's Real Scoop with homemade marshmallow cream. (Queen St. East in the Beach)
  • Fish and chips (halibut) at Happy Place (on Sheppard at Bathurst)
  • Ubashi's homemade baquette from Queen of Tarts on Roncesvalles
  • Inexpensive power tabletop crumb sweeper whimsically shaped like a pig or cow from Kitchen & Glass Place (Yonge north of Bloor)
  • Out of town to Port Hope stop by Zest Food to Go a wonderful little take out/food shop just off the main street, a nice respite after doing the antique shops. Chef Camilo Costales, formerly chef at Youki in Toronto, prepares Asian/Western food you can eat in or take out. Owner Julia Aldis also has well stocked freezers of entrees, sauces and pies.
  • Nella (Bathurst south of Dupont) long synonymous with knife sharpening, now serves up quality equipment for restaurant and home kitchen. Cooking classes are also in their plans.
  • Chocolate chips from Simone Marie Belgian Chocolate shop (on Cumberland)
  • Finally, sit down with a plate of Spanish cheese, especially Manchego, with Quince jelly from Dinah's Cupboard (on Cumberland at Bay) and a glass of port or sherry. This will surely banish the winter blahs!
