Culinary LandmarksAntique Cookbook Roadshow
with food historian Liz Driver
Saturday, June 7th, 1 to 3pm
Do you have old cookbooks tucked away in a drawer? Have you ever wondered about their historical value? Perhaps your old recipe books were passed down within the family or were purchased at a flea market. Whether advertising cookbooks for flour or stoves, community cookbooks for churches or synagogues, old home economics textbooks, or government manuals – bring your treasured Canadian volumes to The Cookbook Store on June 7th between 1 and 3 pm, for an individual assessment of their historical value by Liz Driver, an expert in the field.

Liz is the author of the recently published Culinary Landmarks: A Bibliography of Canadian Cookbooks, 1825–1949 (University of Toronto Press), the Past President of the Culinary Historians of Ontario, and the Curator of Campbell House Museum in Toronto.

Gordon Ramsay and the staff of The Cookbook Store

Fast FoodGordon Ramsay visits The Cookbook Store
Yes, we were delighted to have Chef Ramsay drop by the store after hours and sign copies of Fast Food, so if you are a die hard fan and would love a signed copy don't wait, come in and pick one up, they'll go fast! Chef Ramsay was charming, full of anecdotes and passionate about food.

... and Jamie Oliver

Jamie Oliver and the staff of The Cookbook Store

Always a treat to have Jamie Oliver in the store, he commented that Elizabeth David was one of his favourite cookbook writers, and even Keith Floyd. Interesting how it is classic writers from the past that have inspired him.

Jamie at Home Jamie at Home
Jamie Oliver
Since Jamie Oliver established his family in Essex, his stove finds it must compete with the garden for attention. Oliver’s dual love of gardening and cooking comes together in this collection, organized by season, featuring recipes built on available produce. Each section ends with advice for producing seasonal crops: courgettes (zucchini), potatoes, broad beans… Homemade ketchup with steak and chips, smashed peas and broad beans on toast, and plum Bakewell tart offer a hint of the fresh pleasures in the 100 new recipes. Colour photos. Hardcover, 407 pp, $59.95.

... and Herve This

Herve This

Dr. Herve This gave an inspiring presentation to an audience filled with chefs, food scientists, product developers, students and those curious about food science. Dusting off your high school chemistry was not a prerequisite! Dr. This acknowledges he questions everything about food chemistry and then tries to provide the tools for chefs to push their creative boundaries.

Molecular GastronomyMolecular Gastronomy
Herve This
Here is a must-read for aspiring Blumenthals and Adrias. A collaborator of Pierre Gagnaire and a pioneer of molecular gastronomy, This explains the scientific processes behind everyday culinary reactions. A few hydrocarbon chain diagrams would be welcome but this is still an entertaining read. Hardcover, 377 pp, $35.95.

A note to our customers on currency exchange

As soon as our Canadian suppliers adjust their prices to booksellers, we pass the savings on to our customers. Unfortunately, some publishers are slower than others at doing this.

For all those books The Cookbook Store imports directly from Europe, the United States, and elsewhere, we will continue to adjust prices according to current exchange rates, passing savings on to our customers.

To make sure you are getting the correct price please call for confirmation of online prices as they don’t always reflect the latest adjustment.

We thank your for your continued support as The Cookbook Store heads into its 25th year of independent bookselling in 2008. Our aim is to provide you with the best possible selection of cookbooks from around the world.
