JVD: Tony Basil - can’t remember the album but I remember the song Mickey.

CB: What was your first car?
JVD: 86 Toyota Camry, *##brown!

CB: Your favourite junk food?
JVD: At the moment, cherry Danishes, nutella, ice cream.

CB: What kitchen gadget or piece of equipment can’t you live without?
JVD: Tongs, my grandma’s measuring cups.

CB: Your favourite ingredient, or food?
JVD: Cheese, good bread.

CB: Most over-rated ingredient, or food?
JVD: Cilantro, Truffle oil.

CB: What was the first cookbook you used?
JVD: Best of Bridge; Canadian Living Cookbook, the original one now out of print.

CB: Your favourite authors, doesn’t have to be cookbook authors?
JVD: Laurie Colwin.

CB: Your favourite city?
JVD: Vancouver.

CB: What is your greatest extravagance/indulgence?
JVD: All my money goes to my book printing (I’m self-published), and when there is some left over, eating out or gas for my car!

CB: Your favourite movie?
JVD: Lord of the Rings trilogy.

CB: What was your first job?
JVD: AT&T mascot at the Calgary Olympics.

CB: What kind of music do you like?
JVD: Anything but country and no Celine Dion.

CB: Your favourite sports team?
JVD: Calgary Flames.

CB: Your pet peeve when dining out?
JVD: Huge peppermills, cellphones in restaurants and waiters that are too chatty.

CB: Your favourite drink?
JVD: Milkshakes, scotch.

CB: If you could change one thing in the food & wine industry what would it be?
JVD: Less fast food; corporate and government involvement reduced.

CB: Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
JVD: My granddad, a good businessman. “Life is hard by the yard; by the inch it’s a cinch.”

CB: What four people, alive or dead, would you invite to dinner? (assuming you would invite your significant other to have six around the dinner table!)
JVD: My granddad, Laurie Colwin, Bono, Julia Child, Oprah (only if I’m on her show).
