Food News

Upcoming festivals include the 22nd Vegetarian Food Fair at Harbourfront, September 8-10, with over 100 exhibitors as well as cooking demos this is North America's largest vegetarian food festival.

One of our favourite events is Feast of Fields celebrating all things organic. Always held outdoors this year's event is Sunday, September 17th from 1-5 pm. at Albion Hills Conservation Area.

Rumour has it Wolfgang Puck has taken over the premises of the much lamented Patriot restaurant on Bloor in the Colonade, upper level. Just a rumour, we shall see...

On a recent trip to Prince Edward County, my husband and I spend three hours with the wonderfully engaging Norman Hardie at his self-named winery. I think it's that old French ploy of keeping us at his place long enough so we can't go and visit any body else! His Riesling will be well worth your money.

We visited 5 of the 10 wineries in the County, some are still in their infancy stage but one wants to support them. It reminds me very much of Niagara 20 years ago when Cave Spring Cellars was just starting out. Well worth a visit as you can actually talk to the wine makers, feel the soil, or in this case limestone, and no tour buses in sight, yet!

Lunch at the Bloomfield Carriage House Restaurant (former Toronto chefs Jackie Vickers and Scott Kapitan) and then dinner at Harvest in Picton, where Karen and Michael Potters have now hung their pots and pans, and you have a lovely day or weekend trip.

Speaking of Riesling we have had the opportunity to taste the Charles Baker 2005 Picone Vineyard Riesling. Delicious, full in the mouth, pear with an elegant finish. This will be a perfect match for food, in fact we were imagining pig three ways and a bottle of this Riesling - all would be well! We predict the Charles Baker label will generate a cult following as only 250 six pack cases are available for the 2005 vintage. If you want to order you must get on the mailing list for ordering/shipping in September.

Chef David Lee of Splendido in Toronto, is producing some fantastic breads. His bacon brioche sublime, the breads are available at Pusateri's everyday at the Avenue Road location, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Bay & Yorkville location.

A recent article in The Independent on Britain's richest chefs makes for very interesting reading. Top dog is Gordon Ramsay, worth 67 million pounds at the age of 39! Following close on his apron strings is Jamie Oliver, age 31, at 58 million pounds. I recommend you check out this link for a complete summary of the top 10 and in depth profiles of these millionaire chefs/authors and their empires, you will be intrigued. http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/food_and_drink/features/article1220937.ece
