New Books

Heat
Bill Buford
If you have now finished My Life in France and are looking for another food book to read then pick up this latest arrival. It couldn't be more different, but no less passionate, or well written.

A highly readable book from this engaging former New Yorker writer. When Mario Batali invites amateur home cook Buford to work at Babbo, well, you can imagine what ensues when you have a dysfunctional group of people in a cramped area with sharp objects, hot equipment, who really don't like each other, yes, welcome to the Babbo kitchen! Buford combines humour, kitchen soap opera drama, the common goal of perfection on every plate and a highly volatile Batali to keep the rollicking pace. When Buford heads off to Italy however, the pace lags somewhat as he sets to work with the Dante quoting butcher. In spite of this his layman's curiosity as to the origins of Italian food, ingredients & techniques both at Babbo and in Italy keeps the reader engaged. And you will never again order pasta after 10 pm in a restaurant!

Nasty Bits
Anthony Bourdain
Bourdain is back with his candid and over the top passion for food. A writer/chef who is never afraid to take on the establishment and the activists, individually or at the same time, in the quest for taste.

Chew on This
Eric Schlosser & Charles Wilson
From the author of Fast Food Nation comes more disturbing behind the scenes information on fast food that will make you think twice. One hopes that those who consume fast food will read this and hopefully change habits.

Chocolate Fusion
Frederic Bau
For those who have enjoyed Au Coeur de Saveurs by the same chef/author, this one will send you into chocolate ecstasy. Wonderful research into taste & flavour. Savoury and sweet recipes and of course stunning presentation. Forwards by Pierre Gagnaire and Pierre Herme. We also have back in stock Sous-Vide, Patisserie of Pierre Herme, Au Coeur de Saveurs and Tony Botella's Cocktail Cuisine. All of these books are imported from Europe.

Food News

For the gardeners in our midst you might want to search out the relatively new rose named Julia Child. Chosen by Julia herself to bear her name this floribunda rose has a buttery, golden colour. A hardy, medium - low bush with glossy foliage and a unique & distinctive licorice fragrance. Available in the Toronto area at Fiesta Gardens 200 Christie, north of Bloor 416.537.1244, Humber Nurseries, 8386 Highway 50, Brampton, 905.794.0555.

Bayview Avenue between Millwood and Fleming has become quite the destination for foodies. Cumbrae's have opened up their newest store, with meat and prepared food displays that will seduce you and don't pass on the sausages, excellent on the BBQ. Farther down on the same west side of the street you have one of our favourite bookstores in Toronto, Sleuth of Baker Street with their wonderful selection of mysteries, our latest region for authors Scandinavia - Henning Mankell, Karin Fossum......

Bakeries abound, Rahier, Epi, Cobs. You might want to try a taste test, as the family and I did, of baquettes from each. Whitehouse Meats, just north of Millwood on the east side is always my choice for chicken. As an aside the stationary/gift shop called Write Impressions on the corner is a wonderful shop for cards. Moving on one cannot be without cheese so stop in at Alex's Farm for the latest from Quebec and around the world. One of my favourites is the triple cream Riopelle from Quebec.

There is also a lovely little flower, fruit & vegetable store on the east side that has a great selection of flowers, as well as fingerling and purple potatoes, fresh herbs... There, your trip is now complete, well except for the wine, that alas you will have to go for elsewhere.
